Parsonage Lane- For Sale |
|
The lazy, pastoral beauty of Parsonage Lane, running between Sagg Main and Town Line roads, masks the current frenzy of real estate speculation occurring there. It's the 3rd cross street up from the beach. We'll start our tour from Ocean Rd. and head east. Let's get to the action...More after the jump: |

Middleweight Spec House Battle |
386 vs. 390 Mecox Rd.- Bridgehampton |
|
Today we've got a bare-knuckled Bridgehampton brawl between neighboring spec houses from different builders. Regardless of the outcome, there is one thing, I'm sure, upon which we can all agree. These houses are a definite improvement over the plain ol' farmfield that used to occupy this land! Let the battle begin... |
386 Mecox Rd., Bridgehampton |
|
Allan Schneider's Commission #1 |
Weighing in at $4,295,000, this 6,000 sq. ft. cedar-shingled traditional sits on 1.47 acres and boasts 6 bedrooms, 6.5 baths, 2 fireplaces, 2 car garage, central air, a gunite pool, sprinkler system, a full unfinished basement, alarm system, central stereo, and lots of other stuff. Built by Napoleon Realty: |
390 Mecox Rd., Bridgehampton |
|
Allan Schneider's Commission #2 |
Weighing in at only $3,875,000, this 6,200 sq. ft. cedar-shingled traditional sits on 1.3 acres and boasts 6 bedrooms, 6.5 baths, 4 fireplaces, 2 car garage, central air, a gunite pool, sprinkler system, a full unfinished basement, alarm system, and lots of other stuff too. Built by Ocean Air Development: |
On paper, these houses are obviously very similar. Early nod goes to 390 simply by virtue of price . Battle continues after the jump... |

Renovation Diary: Part 2- Stupid |
I borrowed a hand truck from my builder to relocate the refrigerator that the former owner left behind. We're always running out of ice and beverage room, so i had the ambition to make this our garage fridge. Here is the preliminary result of my effort:
Probably should have turned it sideways. dumbass. So after sweating thorugh my shirt, I paid a few day laborers, conveniently hanging out around the corner, $20 to dislodge and put in my minivan. At home, I can now open the freezer door for the first time in two years without something crashing to the ground. |

HC&G Magazine July 1-15 |
If you missed the July 4th weekend issue of HC&G Magazine, they provide some on point editorial in their Deeds & Dont's section. While the article is a litle promotion heavy, there is still good information for those trying to get a handle on the market, particularly the high end of the spectrum. Click the magazine cover for the article. (While HC&G does not publish all of the articles and photos featured in their paper magazine, they do publish the Deeds & Don'ts section online.) HC&G is a great beach read. |

This American Life |
On June 23rd, NPR re-broadcast a "This American Life" episode from June of 2000 featuring an unusual Sag Harbor real estate deal gone awry. The deal involved Ned Newhouse of the classical music store that bears his name at the top of Main St. You can listen to the episode at the link above by entering "Deal of a Lifetime" into the "search this site" box.

Lightweight Battle in North Sea |
50 Kennedy Dr. vs. 142 Marys Lane |
|
|
Our match today pits a Kennedy Drive veteran (on the market since 10/05) against a Marys Lane newcomer. We won't be pulling punches, so let the games begin: |
50 Kennedy Drive |
|
Allan Schneider's Hidden Treasure |
Weighing in at $649,000, this 1520 sq. ft. contemporary sits on .6 acres and boasts 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, central air, sprinkler system, and a fireplace: |
142 Marys Lane |
|
Jim McLauchlen's Spacious Family Home |
Weighing in at $750,000, this 1400 sq. ft. ranch sits on .92 acres and boasts 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, a full basement, fireplace, central air, and 1 car garage. |
Kennedy jumps out to a slight early lead - Kennedy has a nicer house for $100k less. Mary Lane's property is 1/3 bigger. Both seem equally expandable. Battle continues after the jump... |

Commercial Space to Rise at 34 Bay St. in Sag Harbor |
Sag Harbor's Architectural Review Board approved Stephen and James Loeffler's plan for a brick office building to be built at the old gas station at this lot on the bay. I caught a glimpse of the mock-up; looks beautiful. Should be a nice improvement from the current state of this lot, and hopefully it won't adversely effect what is generally a good area for parking.
It's right down the street from the American Legion/Dockside Restaurant

Renovation Diary- Part I: The House |
My search for the perfect spec house has finally ended with the purchase of this 4 bedroom, 2 bath, 1800 sq. ft., 19th century historic masterpiece of shingled goodness on .14 acres in Sag Harbor village. Check it out:
|
|
So after 6 months scouring the market, I finally found a house that was:
a) in my price range
b) reasonably priced (we’ll see)
c) seemingly in need of and easily renovatable (we’ll see)
d) something that just felt right
I’ll spare you the details about how I found my broker and builder and did all of the research to determine that this was the right one. Just know this- I have absolutely no idea what I am doing. I am not technically or handyman inclined. I think I know good design from bad, but I could spend a week ruminating the merits of particular shades of color for a bath mat purchase. I’m very good at saying, “I like that. “I don’t like that.” But there is a little too much nuance, too many variables, and I have too little expertise to make the definitive decisions that I assume will be necessary when it comes to renovating this house. So we’ll see how it goes.
Check out more pics!
