Fascia and Chimney |

Detailing on Fascia being restored. Looks like we may need a little masonry work at the base of the chimney. Alas, the fireplace in the living room is long long gone. |

Reno Diary 7: Siding |
Siding |
|
We hadn't yet decided whether to re-side the entire house (and roof) or to just re-paint and repair. But we did know that the asbestos shingles on the north side of the house would have to go. |
Compare and Contrast |
|
You can see the difference between the cedar-shingled front and the asbestos-shingled side even though it doesn't loook so dramatic. Click photo for the larger version. Asbestos has to go regardless. |
New Window Close-Up |
|
Here's a close-up from the Week 5 update that shows the asbsestos shingles and the old siding underneath. |
So see what we're doing after the jump... |

Renovation Diary 5: Framing, Plumbing, hvac |
Madison St. Renovation Gets Serious |
|
Someone on one of the work crews hung this American flag left by the previous owners. Ironic considering that many of these workers aren't exactly American? I don't think so. This is the land of opportunity. Check out the work that's been done since we gutted after the break... |

Reno Diary 4: Demolition |
Stripped |
Interior demolition is nearly complete. The walls, floors and ceilings are being stripped, bathrooms and kitchen removed, some walls knocked out. When all has been laid bare, we will assess what needs to be done and refine our budget.
|
Wide-Plank Floors |
Good news regarding the flooring. Underneath the linoleum, shag carpeting, cheap parquet, and newer thin-plank wood floors running throughout the house, we discovered the original wide-plank floors. This will enable us to restore original character at a limited cost.
Check out the before and after shots after the jump...

Reno Diary 3: The Septic Tank |
|
Digging for Doodie |
Our desire to fit a gunite pool in the back yard entailed an assessment of the septic system. We needed to determine the make-up and location of the Cess and it's Overflow pools to learn whether they could simply be moved or would need an upgrade and a move.
At first, we were told that we would need Health Department approval to move a cesspool and install a swimming pool. (in this case, an 8x10 ft. "plunge pool".) Fortunately, this information was incorrect; we only needed a certified septic tank company to perform the work within Sag Harbor Village code, assuming that we had adequate space for all of the setback and footprint requirements. Once we determined that we did have room, our septic tank guys dug up the lawn to further their due diligence.

Once they popped the cover, they found a problem |

Renovation Diary: Part 2- Stupid |
I borrowed a hand truck from my builder to relocate the refrigerator that the former owner left behind. We're always running out of ice and beverage room, so i had the ambition to make this our garage fridge. Here is the preliminary result of my effort:
Probably should have turned it sideways. dumbass. So after sweating thorugh my shirt, I paid a few day laborers, conveniently hanging out around the corner, $20 to dislodge and put in my minivan. At home, I can now open the freezer door for the first time in two years without something crashing to the ground. |

Renovation Diary- Part I: The House |
My search for the perfect spec house has finally ended with the purchase of this 4 bedroom, 2 bath, 1800 sq. ft., 19th century historic masterpiece of shingled goodness on .14 acres in Sag Harbor village. Check it out:
|
|
So after 6 months scouring the market, I finally found a house that was:
a) in my price range
b) reasonably priced (we’ll see)
c) seemingly in need of and easily renovatable (we’ll see)
d) something that just felt right
I’ll spare you the details about how I found my broker and builder and did all of the research to determine that this was the right one. Just know this- I have absolutely no idea what I am doing. I am not technically or handyman inclined. I think I know good design from bad, but I could spend a week ruminating the merits of particular shades of color for a bath mat purchase. I’m very good at saying, “I like that. “I don’t like that.” But there is a little too much nuance, too many variables, and I have too little expertise to make the definitive decisions that I assume will be necessary when it comes to renovating this house. So we’ll see how it goes.
Check out more pics!
